Hanna Nasser, head of Palestinian Central Elections' Committee (CEC), met the Palestinian PM Ismail Haniyeh on Monday in the Gaza Strip to begin work on updating the electoral register in a key step to pave the way for elections.

Jamil Khaldi, head of (CEC) in Gaza, said that work would only begin on Monday after the arrival of his West Bank counterpart, Hanna Nasser.

"Nothing will happen today. The CEC delegation led by Hanna Nasser will arrive in Gaza on Monday and we will all have a meeting with PM Ismail Haniya. Immediately afterwards, we will start our work," he said.

It is noted that senior Fatah and Hamas officials agreed, on May 20 in Cairo, that the Palestinian electoral commission would start work in Gaza on May 27 and that consultations to form a new interim "government of independents" would start the same day, as confirmed by Fatah, Hamas and the Egyptian intelligence service, which is sponsoring the negotiations.
