Former Sudanese president visits Gaza

Former Sudanese president Abdulrahman Suwareddahab is to visit Gaza Strip by mid-May, Abdulsalam Siyam, the secretary of the Palestinian government in Gaza, said on Monday.

Suwareddahab, who is currently the chairman of the board of trustees of the Islamic Dawa (Call) organization, had taken over power in the Sudan in April 1985 during a popular intifada in his capacity as the highest ranking commanding officer in the Sudanese army.

He gave up power one year later to the elected government led by Al-Sadeq Al-Mahdi then resigned from politics and endorsed his time to Islamic Dawa.

Suwareddahab, born in 1935, served as chief of staff then defense minister in the reign of former Sudanese president Jafar Nimeiri.
