The Tunnels Committee will cease its operations as from 18March, 2014 and be replaced by the Borders Security Department, the Gaza Ministry of Interior (MOI)announced today.
Until the total destruction of all tunnels by the Egyptian authorities, the Tunnels Committee was responsible for regulating all traffic coming in and out of the southern Gaza Strip through a narrow strip of land between Egypt and Palestine in the Rafah directorate.
“The Rafah tunnels were the only way in which 1.8 million Palestinians in the embattled Gaza Strip were able to secure basic items, fuel and construction materials,” said MOI spokesperson Iyad Al-bosum.
“Since their closure by Egypt, the tunnels’ security forces no longer operate,” he added.
The new Borders Security Departmenthas been in operation since mid-March. It patrolsthe northern, southern and eastern borders of the Gaza Strip, securing them from violations.
