Gaza-Palestine
Desperate Gazans received another blow today, when the General Administration of Gaza Borders was forced to close its travel registration offices, due to the closure of the Rafah Crossing by Egyptian authorities.
The closures of the Abo Khadra and DeirAlbalah travel registration offices on Wednesday came only one day after they had reopened, causing the backlog of 5000, the MOI announced in a brief statement on its website.
The Egyptian authorities have shut the Rafah Border Crossing for more than 45 days since the beginning of 2014, causing severe hardship for those needing to leave for medical treatment or study, as well as for those trapped inside the Gaza Strip.
The entry of basic items and construction materials has been barred since the imposition of a blockade in 2006 by the Israeli Occupation, and the movement of people has been similarly restricted.
The situation has deteriorated significantly following the 2013 overthrow of President Morsi, and Egypt’s total destruction of the Rafah tunnels on Palestinian-Egyptian border in the south of the Gaza Strip.
With essential medicines and equipment lacking, increasing numbers of Palestinians are forced to leave through Rafah for life-saving treatment in other countries.
Along with the Rafah Crossing, that option is now closed to them.
